Coaching Tools Mastery - Right Tool, Right Mind

Right Tool, Right Mind

The opening lesson of the course. It's the ethos that runs through all six modules.

Lesson 1.1.1 · 7 minutes · Module 1, Unit 1: The Hand, Not the Tool. Or browse the full course playlist.

Not a 90-minute webinar with CCE attached

Most CCE on the market is a single talk you sit through, claim hours for, and forget. This course is built differently.

A typical CCE webinar

One session, one topic, one hour, one certificate.

  • Single session, no structured curriculum
  • No competency mapping you can show a panel
  • Access expires after 30 to 90 days
  • No artifacts you keep using after
This course

Six modules, 20 hours, mapped to ICF competencies, yours for life.

  • Structured discernment method across six modules
  • Per-unit ICF Core Competency mapping (Step 8 packet)
  • Lifetime access - revisit when you change niches
  • 17 worksheets, chain cards, and a Tool-Selection Map you keep

What changes in your sessions after this course

Six practical shifts. Each is something you'll do differently in your next session.

01

Read whether a tool fits this moment

Run the five-move discernment loop before reaching for a worksheet - and recognise the moments when staying with what's alive beats any tool.

02

Name the shift you intend

Co-name the intended shift with the client - awareness, clarity, action, integration - before picking the instrument. The conversation changes when the purpose has a name.

03

Match a tool on four dimensions

Purpose, format, time, readiness. A repeatable check you can run in real time, not a memorised tool list.

04

Design and repair a tool-chain

Sequence tools across sessions toward client growth - and diagnose what to do when a chain breaks mid-engagement.

05

Hold presence while tools are running

Tools as vehicles for the client's insight, never a substitute for your presence. The mind behind the tool stays the point.

06

Walk away with your own Tool-Selection Map

A personal decision aid you can pull up in a session, tuned to the niches you actually coach. Tested against unseen scenarios in the final module.

Six modules built around the five moves

Each module goes deep on one move in the discernment loop. Hours and ICF Core Competency split are documented per lesson in your learner workspace.

The Discernment Mindset
Read the Moment - the prelude
2.5h · 5 lessons · CC 2.5
Why a tool in the wrong hands is dangerous, and what changes when discernment leads. The mindset the rest of the course builds on.
  • Right Tool, Right Mind - the ethos
  • Collection vs Mastery - why knowing 400 tools isn't the skill
  • The five moves - map of the course
  • The cost of over-tooling - tools as avoidance
  • Staying with what's alive - when the moment needs you, not a worksheet
02
Read the Moment
Where in the arc, and what's alive now
3.0h · 5 lessons · CC 2.5 / RD 0.5
Before you choose a tool, you read the moment. The engagement arc - discovery, goal-setting, action, reflection, review - and the signals that tell you a tool fits or doesn't.
  • The five phases of an engagement arc
  • Where tools live in each phase, and the classic phase-mismatch error
  • Signals a tool will help - stuckness, abstraction, overwhelm
  • Signals to wait - emotion, fresh insight, trust-building
03
Name the Purpose & Match the Tool
The heart of selection
4.0h · 7 lessons · CC 2.5 / RD 1.5
Naming the intended shift, then matching a tool to it on four dimensions. Includes how to use a 498-tool library as a selection lens instead of a catalog to memorise.
  • The four intents - awareness, clarity, action, integration
  • Co-naming the purpose with the client (Establishes Agreements)
  • The four fit dimensions - purpose, format, time, readiness
  • Choosing between two near-equivalent tools in the moment
  • Using the catalog's produces/consumes metadata as a search lens
04
The Craft of Tool-Chains
Design, extend, prune, repair
5.0h · 8 lessons · CC 1.5 / RD 3.5
How to sequence tools across sessions - grounded in adult-learning theory (Kolb's experiential cycle, Vygotsky's zone of proximal development). Including how to recognise and repair a chain that's breaking.
  • Holding a chain as a hypothesis, not a script (presence over plan)
  • Chain design principles - length, extension, pruning
  • Constructing a chain toward a specific growth outcome
  • Diagnosing break-shapes and repairing mid-engagement
05
Tool-Chains in Context
10+ worked chains across niches
4.5h · 13 lessons · CC 3.0 / RD 1.5
Self-paced by niche. The five moves applied to real client scenarios across life, career, executive, and ADHD coaching. Pick the chains that match your practice.
  • Life coaching - clarity, integration, habit-formation chains
  • Career coaching - decision, transition, identity chains
  • Executive coaching - presence, stakeholder, leadership chains
  • ADHD coaching - executive function, energy, systems chains
06
Build Your Tool-Selection Map
The capstone artifact
2.0h · 3 lessons · CC 2.0
Synthesize the method into a personal decision aid you can pull up in a session. Tested against unseen scenarios. The artifact you keep using long after the course ends.
  • Translating the five moves into a one-page personal map
  • Testing the map on unseen client scenarios
  • The practicum - a complete session-plan you can defend on competency grounds

Which competencies this course goes deep on

If you're claiming these hours toward a credential, here's how each of the eight ICF Core Competencies shows up in the course - the ones we go deep on, the ones we touch in passing, and the one we don't cover.

Ethical Practice
Not covered

Touched
Cultivates Trust & Safety

Deepened

Deepened means at least one full lesson teaches the competency directly. Touched means it shows up in a chain or selection moment. The 3 mandatory ethics renewal hours aren't claimed here - earn those elsewhere. A detailed lesson-by-competency map is included in your learner workspace once you enroll.

Who this course is for, and who it isn't

Two quick lists so you can self-select before you enroll.

For you if
  • You're a credentialed coach (ACC, PCC, MCC) who feels you collect tools faster than you use them well
  • You're working toward ACC and want a discipline for tool-selection before you build bad habits
  • You coach across mainstream solo niches - life, career, executive, ADHD, general practice
  • You want CCE hours that come with structured curriculum, not single-session webinars
  • You'd value a personal decision aid you can pull up in a real session
Not the right fit if
  • You're pre-credential and haven't been through coaching foundations - start with our Coaching Foundations course first
  • You're looking for a single-niche specialty - try ADHD, somatic, or systemic coaching once those open
  • You want a magic tool list - this course teaches the judgment to choose, not what to memorise
  • You need the three ICF ethics renewal hours - this course doesn't claim them
  • You're looking for synchronous live cohort instruction - this is fully self-paced

Authored end-to-end by an MCC.

Not "led by" - written, recorded, and reviewed by an active Master Certified Coach. No guest faculty, no ghostwritten modules.

Before you enroll

Is this really free? What's the catch?

Really free, no catch. The course is at $0 while its ICF CCE accreditation is in review. Pricing turns on once accreditation lands - and if you enrolled before that, the course stays yours, free, for life.

What we ask in return: your email so we can let you know when the CCE designation lands, and the chance to learn from how you use the material.

Will the hours count toward my ACC, PCC, or MCC renewal?

Once ICF approves the CCE designation for this course, the 20.0 instructional hours - 14 Core Competency, 6 Resource Development - will count toward your renewal CCE requirement. Pre-approval, completion still earns you the certificate and the learning, but the hours aren't yet claimable as ICF CCE.

The course doesn't claim the 3 mandatory ethics renewal hours - earn those elsewhere.

What's the framework, in plain English?

Right Tool, Right Mind. Five moves you run in the moment: Read the Moment (is a tool called for at all?), Name the Purpose (what shift am I after?), Match the Tool (four-dimension fit check), Chain the Sequence (sequencing across sessions), Hold Presence (the tool serves presence, never substitutes for it).

The "mind" is the point. A tool in the wrong hands is dangerous. The course teaches the hand.

I'm not credentialed yet. Can I take this?

You can enroll, but the course assumes coaching foundations. If you haven't trained in the ICF Core Competencies yet, start with our free Coaching Foundations module on the ACC certification page - that gives you the grounding this course builds on.

If you're pre-credential but have been through coaching training elsewhere, you'll be fine.

How long does it take?

20 hours of structured content. Most coaches complete it across 3-6 weeks at 3-5 hours per week. There's no deadline - your access doesn't expire.

Module 5 (worked tool-chains in context) is self-paced by niche - you pick the chains that match your practice, so you can finish in less time if you focus on your niches.

What do I actually get at the end?

Three things you keep using:

1. A personal Tool-Selection Map - a one-page decision aid you build during Module 6 and can pull up in a real session.

2. 17 resources - 14 framework worksheets and chain cards, 4 niche-specific tool-chain sets, the Map capstone.

3. A certificate of completion - shareable on LinkedIn; suitable for L&D reimbursement; carries the ICF CCE-Approved Program badge once accreditation lands.

Will my employer reimburse this?

During the free window there's no cost to reimburse. Once the course transitions to paid pricing, we issue an invoice and a verifiable certificate - both standard L&D documentation. Confirm your specific policy with HR.

How is this different from other Tandem programs?

Tandem's flagship programs are ICF Level 1 (ACC) and Level 2 (PCC) - those are credential-earning programs that take you from no coaching credential to ACC or PCC. Months long, instructor-led, with practice sessions and mentor coaching.

This course is a specialization for coaches who already have foundations. It's narrower in scope (tool discernment specifically), shorter (20 hours), self-paced, and complements - rather than replaces - credential training.
