January 1, 2027 changes who can mentor coach for ICF.

Through December 31, 2026, mentor coaching from any coach who meets today's ICF requirements counts toward a candidate's ACC, PCC, or MCC application. From January 1, 2027, new mentor coaching hours count only when the mentor coach holds the new ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) at the appropriate level. Hours completed before that date stay recognized.

The two paths

41 hours, or 10.

Both paths lead to the same MCS designation. The difference is how you demonstrate readiness.

41
Standard Path

At least 41 hours of education aligned with the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies, at least half of it live with an instructor. ICF's evaluation training for each level - the ACC and MCC Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales (BARS) and the PCC Markers - counts toward the 41 as self-paced hours.

10
Credit for Prior Learning

For holders of an active PCC or MCC, or a renewed ACC: at least 10 hours of education aligned with the Mentor Coaching Competencies (live or self-paced), ICF's evaluation training for each level you seek, and five mentor coaching clients who earned a credential in the past three years - or a letter from the accredited program you mentor in.

Mentor Coaching Foundations is a 10-hour course for the Credit for Prior Learning path. ICF has announced no end date for that path. The date that matters is January 1, 2027: from then, the mentor coaching you give counts toward a client's credential only if you hold the specialization.

April 2026 Update

What ICF announced.

Four changes that redefine mentor coaching for credential candidates from January 1, 2027.

  • New MCS designation.

Coaches who mentor credential candidates need the specialization at the ACC, PCC, or MCC level.

  • Two paths to qualify.

Standard Path (41 hours, evaluation training included) or Credit for Prior Learning (10 hours, plus evaluation training and five credentialed clients).

  • Performance evaluation recordings replaced.

From April 1, 2027, ACC and PCC Portfolio candidates submit Session Observation Forms and a Competency Review Form completed by a specialized mentor coach instead of performance evaluation recordings.

  • Renewable every 3 years.

10 hours of continuing education aligned with the Mentor Coaching Competencies, plus an active ICF credential.

Three coaches this course was built for

Mentor Coaching Foundations was designed for credentialed coaches who already do this work, or are about to, and want formal, ICF-aligned education in mentor coaching. Watch every lesson free. Add the certificate when you need the 10 hours on record.

Persona 1

The Credit for Prior Learning applicant

PCC, MCC, or renewed ACC with five mentor coaching clients who earned a credential in the past three years.

  • You can document five credentialed mentor coaching clients - or the accredited program you mentor in can confirm five students in a letter.
  • You need 10 hours of mentor coaching education, plus ICF's evaluation training for each level you apply for.
  • You want a credible, self-paced route to the specialization, with a certificate as your record of the 10 hours.

Persona 3

The specialization renewer

You hold the Mentor Coach Specialization, or will soon, and need continuing education for its three-year renewal.

  • 10 hours aligned with the Mentor Coaching Competencies - what ICF asks for every three years. It counts when you complete it after your specialization is awarded.
  • Self-paced - revisit modules as your practice evolves.
  • Built around the 2024 Mentor Coaching Competencies and the 2025 Core Competencies, so it stays current with ICF's evaluation tools.

“Although I have been mentor coaching for years, I learned a great deal that I can seamlessly integrate and implement into my mentor coaching work.”

Six modules. 25 videos. Every ICF Mentor Coaching Competency.

Each module teaches one of the six 2024 ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies. The arc moves from grounding (who you are as a mentor coach) through how you run an engagement, to the skill-intensive core (formative appraisal and developmental feedback), and closes with group mentor coaching, which draws on everything before it.

English isn’t my first language. Can I follow the course?

Yes. The course is delivered in English, every one of the 25 videos is captioned, and a written transcript is attached to each lesson. You can read along with the narration, translate the transcript, or work through the written version at whatever pace suits you rather than relying on listening alone. Because Foundations is fully asynchronous there’s no live session to keep up with, and no time-zone problem – two things that matter if you’re studying in a second language or outside North America.

“The course catered to different ways of learning through videos, slides, written content, transcripts, practical assignments, and templates. The timely, strengths-based feedback reinforced my learning, built my confidence, and modeled the very principles the course was teaching.”

Both instructors hold ICF MCC and the Mentor Coach Specialization at all three levels.

Cherie Silas and Alex Kudinov are co-founders of Tandem Coaching Academy. Both hold MCC and ICF’s Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) at all three levels: MCS-ACC, MCS-PCC, and MCS-MCC. Every mentor coach on our team holds the MCS at the level they mentor. They created Foundations together, and Cherie narrates every video lesson.

Module 1 · Ethical Practice and Role Clarity

What Is Mentor Coaching?

The opening lesson. Cherie sets ICF's definition of mentor coaching beside your own, works through it phrase by phrase, and shows where mentor coaching sits between traditional mentoring and professional coaching.

Module 4 · Conducting Formative Appraisals

Why Formative, Not Summative

The Module 4 opener: formative appraisal and summative assessment, the two separate ICF changes in 2027, the two ICF forms that carry the evidence, and the 67% threshold read exactly as ICF wrote it.

10 CCE hours - earned, not granted.

Watching the course is free. The $397 certificate is how that learning becomes 10 CCE hours: three quizzes and six written assignments confirm what you can do before your certificate is issued. The written assignments mirror real mentor coaching work - they are not busy-work.

3 auto-scored quizzes

Scenario-based, drawn at random from a larger pool, with an explanation for every question. 80% to pass, unlimited retakes.

  • Module 1 quiz - 15 questions from a pool of 45 on role distinctions, the ICF Code of Ethics, recordings and data, and referral.
  • Module 2 quiz - 10 questions from a pool of 30 on hours, timing, credential-level fit, and an engagement from intake to closing.
  • Module 4 quiz - 12 questions from a pool of 36 on formative appraisal, rating evidence on the ACC statements, and when each ICF form is used.

6 written assignments

Each one reviewed against its rubric by an MCC instructor, with written feedback. If a criterion isn't met yet, you revise once.

  • Module 1: Analyze three ethical situations a mentor coach meets - the issue, the standard, your action, and your reasoning.
  • Module 2: Draft the engagement agreement you would send a new mentor coaching client.
  • Module 3: Write a six-session development plan for the same client, built on the learning cycle.
  • Module 4: Rate the ACC practice recording on the ACC Session Observation Form, then compare your read with Cherie Silas's reference evaluation and reflect on the differences.
  • Module 5: Write the developmental feedback you would give the coach in that recording. Once it's approved, you see Cherie's own feedback on the same session.
  • Module 6: Design a 90-minute group mentor coaching session for up to six participants.

Questions coaches ask before they start.

Pulled from real conversations with credentialed coaches navigating the Mentor Coach Specialization rollout. If your question isn't here, email hello@tandemcoach.co - we will answer in writing.

Is the course really free? What does the certificate add?

Yes. Every lesson is free for any registered community member: all 25 videos, their transcripts, and the 38 downloadable PDFs. No credit card.

The $397 certificate adds three quizzes, six written assignments reviewed by an MCC instructor with written feedback, and your certificate for 10 CCE hours from an ICF-approved program. Add it when you want the hours on record - for a Credit for Prior Learning application, a renewal, or your own continuing education log.

Should I take Foundations or the live cohort?

Depends on your application path.

Take Foundations, with the $397 certificate, if you are on the Credit for Prior Learning path - you hold an active PCC or MCC, or a renewed ACC, you have five mentor coaching clients who earned a credential in the past three years (or a letter from the accredited program you mentor in), and you need the 10 hours of mentor coaching education.

Buy our live cohort ($2,997) if you are taking the Standard Path - you need the full 41 hours with at least half of them live with an instructor, group practicum, and formative evaluation. Foundations content is included as just-in-time pre-work inside the cohort, so do not buy it separately.

See Mentor Coach Training - $2,997 →

What isn't included with the certificate?

Four things sit outside Foundations:

  • ICF MCS application fee (paid directly to ICF: $50 / $125 USD through March 31, 2027)
  • ICF's evaluation training (ACC BARS, PCC Markers, MCC BARS) - complete it through the ICF Learning Portal for each level you apply for
  • Live synchronous hours, group practicum, and formative evaluation - those are in our Standard Path program, Mentor Coach Training (71 hours, $2,997)
  • 1:1 mentor coaching sessions - Tandem's individual mentor coaching is purchased separately
My organization is paying. Can you invoice or take a purchase order?

Yes – invoices issued before you enroll, purchase orders, Government Purchase Cards and federal forms, and receipts for expense claims on every purchase. Eligible U.S. service members and military retirees receive 10% off this training; eligible spouses and dependents receive 5%, subject to the Military Training Discount terms in our Additional Terms. Send paperwork to info@tandemcoach.co; our registration details are on our Capability Statement.

What is the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS)?

The MCS is an individual specialization from the International Coaching Federation - announced in April 2026, with applications open since June 2026. It formally recognizes coaches who are qualified to provide mentor coaching to ICF credential candidates at a specific level (ACC, PCC, or MCC). The MCS is evaluated against the 2024 ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and is separate from your own ACC, PCC, or MCC credential.

Why does ICF require it now, and what changes on January 1, 2027?

Two dates matter. From January 1, 2027, new mentor coaching hours toward an ACC, PCC, or MCC application or renewal count only when the mentor coach holds the specialization at the appropriate level. Hours completed before that date stay recognized. From April 1, 2027, ACC and PCC Portfolio candidates submit Session Observation Forms and a Competency Review Form completed by a specialized mentor coach instead of performance evaluation recordings.

What's the Credit for Prior Learning path versus the Standard Path?

Both paths lead to the same specialization. The Standard Path requires at least 41 hours of education aligned with the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies, at least half of it live with an instructor; ICF's evaluation training for each level counts toward the 41. The Credit for Prior Learning path is for holders of an active PCC or MCC, or a renewed ACC. It requires at least 10 hours of mentor coaching education (live or self-paced), ICF's evaluation training for each level you seek, and five mentor coaching clients who earned a credential in the past three years - or a letter from the ICF-accredited program you mentor in, confirming at least five students in the past three years.

Does this course count toward the Credit for Prior Learning path?

Yes - that's the design. Mentor Coaching Foundations gives you the 10 hours of mentor coaching education the path requires, aligned with the 2024 ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies, and the course is ICF CCE approved. The $397 certificate is your record of those hours. It is issued only after you pass every quiz and written assignment.

Do I still need to take ICF's BARS or PCC Markers separately?

Yes. On the Credit for Prior Learning path, evaluation training (ACC BARS, PCC Markers, MCC BARS) is separate and additional - it does not count toward the 10 hours. Take it through the ICF Learning Portal, or as the equivalent inside a program that holds ICF's Advanced Accreditation in Mentor Coaching, for each level you apply for. Module 4's practice with the ACC statements is part of this course; it is not ICF's ACC BARS Training.

What's the attestation letter, and can Tandem write one for me?

On the Credit for Prior Learning path, ICF accepts a letter from an ICF-accredited program in place of documenting five individual clients. If you mentor coach within an accredited program, the program can confirm that you mentored at least five of its students in the past three years. Graduates of Tandem Coaching Academy who meet that threshold can request the letter when they submit their specialization application.

Can I use these 10 hours to renew the specialization?

When you complete it after your specialization is awarded, yes. To renew, ICF asks for 10 hours of continuing education aligned with the Mentor Coaching Competencies within the three years since your specialization was awarded or last renewed, so hours completed before the award - such as the 10 you apply with - don't count toward its renewal. Separately, your certificate's 10 CCE hours in Core Competencies can count toward your own ICF credential renewal.

How long do I have to complete the course?

There is no deadline in the course: work at your own pace, and the certificate comes with lifetime access. On ICF's side, there is no announced end date for the Credit for Prior Learning path. Two dates may still shape your timing: ICF's introductory application fee ends at the end of March 2027, and from January 1, 2027 the mentor coaching you give counts toward a client's credential only if you hold the specialization. Allow time for ICF to review your application.

What if I fail a quiz or my written assignment needs revision?

The three quizzes have unlimited retakes - you need 80% to pass. If a written assignment doesn't meet a criterion yet, the instructor tells you which one and why, and you revise it once. The rubrics are calibrated to ICF expectations, not arbitrarily strict.

What does the certificate look like?

A PDF certificate with: your name as it appears on your ICF credential, the program title, completion date, a unique certificate ID, the 10 CCE hours (Core Competency, asynchronous, aligned with the 2024 Mentor Coaching Competencies), instructor signatures from Cherie Silas and Alex Kudinov, and confirmation of ICF CCE approval for 10 CCEUs. Keep it, with the course syllabus, for your specialization application and your credential renewal.

Do Cherie and Alex hold the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization themselves?

Yes. Cherie Silas and Alex Kudinov, both MCC, hold ICF’s Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) at all three levels: MCS-ACC, MCS-PCC, and MCS-MCC. Every mentor coach on our team holds the MCS at the level they mentor. Their specializations cover mentor coaching and formative appraisal at all three ICF credential levels.

On the Standard Path, do I buy Foundations plus a separate practicum?

No. The Standard Path is delivered as one integrated program - our 71-hour Mentor Coach Training cohort, accredited under the ICF Advanced Accreditation in Mentor Coaching (AAMC). Foundations is included inside the cohort as just-in-time pre-work, so Standard Path candidates buy the cohort ($2,997), not Foundations plus a separate practicum. See the cohort dates.

Can I verify this course’s ICF CCE approval?

Yes. ICF lists this 10-hour CCE-approved course as Mentor Coaching Foundations. View the official ICF Education Search Service record →
