We consider the International Coaching Federation ICF credentials a Gold Standard in Coaching for a reason. In the industry where anyone who reads a book about coaching or take a short coaching course and can throw together an online calendar to take appointments can call himself a coach, stringent application path ICF requires of its credential holders to follow serve as a beacon of quality service and stamp of proficiency.
Agile coaching took the world of Agile by storm and left many people confused and frustrated in its wake. While I reserve a detailed discussion of what Agile coaching is and isn’t for another article, I don’t think anyone would argue that coaching skills and proficiency, and most importantly, the coaching mindset, are essential for any professional calling herself an Agile coach.
At the same time, confusion reigns amongst the professional coaches who heard about this new strain of coaching, called agile, and later realized that it got little to do with coaching profession, even less with high standards of coaching training, mastery of core coaching competencies, and following the high standards of skill levels the ICF credentialed coaches came expect from their ilk. While professional coaching core competencies, such as creating awareness, asking powerful questions, active listening, maintaining coaching presence, direct communication, planning and goal setting, and managing progress, to name a few, started percolating the world of the Agile Coaching recently, they are still way obscure and widely misunderstood by the majority of the agile practitioners. No wonder coaching clients are getting disappointed with the coaching service they receive in the market.
What Is Coaching ICF Credentials?
Let’s start with distinguishing coaching certification and coaching credentials. You become a certified coach by attending a class or two that might take as little as two days or as long as two weeks. There are no clear standards who can be called a certified coach and what it means to be one. Coaching credentials, which are issued by a handful organizations worldwide, one of them being ICF, are different.
Let me start by saying there is no simple path to becoming an International Coaching federation credentialed coach, period. End of discussion. Coaching mindset is not something that you get out of a 2-day class. Coaching Certifications and coach training programs offering a variety of certificates are abundant, but few of those offer the academic rigor and core competency building capabilities the coaches need to meet the stringent ICF standards. The value of the credentials is coming from the rigor and the sheer number of requirements and different, interrelated factors which, taken together, make a competent, professional, and well-rounded coach.
Cherie recognized the value of coaching skills in Agile environments. Also, she saw how those lacking these valuable skills struggled in command-and-control settings.
