Choosing the Right Coach Training Program Feels Overwhelming
There are dozens of ICF-accredited programs out there. They all claim to be the best. The requirements are confusing - Level 1 vs. Portfolio pathway, ACSTH vs. ACTP, 60 hours vs. 125 hours. How do you know you're getting real coaching skills and not just a credential mill?
Maybe you're considering a career change into coaching and this is a significant investment. Or you're already coaching and need the credential to land better clients and bigger contracts. Maybe you're a leader who wants to bring coaching skills into your organization. Whatever brought you here, you need a program that actually prepares you - not one that just checks boxes.
You also want to know that when you finish, you won't be left figuring out the ICF application process alone. That someone will actually guide you through mentoring, performance evaluation, exam prep, and the dozen small steps between "I completed training" and "I have my ACC credential."
That's exactly why we built this program. Not to produce the most graduates, but to produce the best ones - coaches who are genuinely ready to serve clients at a professional level, with two Master Certified Coaches guiding every step of the way.

What Our Graduates Say
Real reviews from coaches and leaders who trained with Tandem.
"I learned so much from Cherie through the years that basically it became the core of my coaching style. Tandem Coaching provided me with such a solid foundation that will stay with me for the rest of my life."
"From a first introduction to what coaching is up to a journey towards coaching mastery, Tandem Coaching, with Cherie and Alex, is truly the right team to bring motivated individuals to their next level. What is even richer is that team leads, servant leaders, scrum masters, product owners, consultants, and facilitators all benefit from this program."
"The most valuable aspect of the course was the mentoring sessions. It was great to be amongst like-minded professionals going through the same issues. I also really appreciated how the coaches let everyone provide their feedback before they answered the questions. Thank you Cherie and Alex for guiding and helping throughout the process."
"Sometimes you get a fresh drink of new ideas and move on with life, but Tandem Coaching has been a well that I've returned to often. Beyond the courses I attended I've been able to expand my network, grow my skills, and develop enduring relationships that have led to new income streams."
How to Get Your ICF ACC Certification: Requirements & Process
What Is the ICF ACC Certification?
The Associate Certified Coach (ACC) is the first credential level awarded by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) – the largest and most recognized professional coaching organization in the world, representing over 50,000 members across more than 140 countries. For coaches building a professional coaching career, earning an ACC credential signals to clients, employers, and organizations that you have completed rigorous coach-specific training, demonstrated competency in the ICF Core Competencies, and committed to the ICF Code of Ethics.
For many coaches, the ACC is the foundational milestone that opens doors to paid coaching engagements, corporate contracts, and a credible professional identity. It's also the first step on a path that can lead to the PCC (Professional Certified Coach) and MCC (Master Certified Coach) credentials as your experience grows.

ICF ACC Certification Requirements
To earn your ACC credential, ICF requires you to meet five core criteria. Here's what each one involves:
Level 1 Pathway vs. Portfolio Pathway
ICF offers multiple application paths to earn your ACC, but the two most common are the Level 1 pathway and the Portfolio pathway. Understanding the difference can save you significant time and complexity.
Level 1 Pathway
Complete an ICF Level 1 accredited program (like Tandem's). Your program certificate is the primary document you submit to ICF – no need to collect paperwork from multiple providers. Education, mentor coaching, and performance evaluation are all included in the program. This is the simplest, fastest route.
Portfolio Pathway
Piece together your education from non-accredited or CCE-approved courses. You'll need to document each education provider separately, arrange your own mentor coaching and performance evaluation, and submit a more complex application. The review takes longer (up to 14 weeks vs. 4) and costs more.
Tandem's ACC program follows the Level 1 pathway – meaning everything you need is built into one cohesive program. When you finish, you receive a single completion certificate that ICF accepts directly. No chasing down transcripts or coordinating with multiple vendors.
How Long Does It Take to Get ACC Certified?
Most coaches complete the process in 6 to 12 months, depending on how quickly they move through the education modules and accumulate their 100 coaching hours. The training itself can be completed faster – Tandem's modular structure lets you start with any upcoming cohort and progress at your own pace. The coaching experience hours are typically what determines your overall timeline, since those happen in parallel with (and after) your education.
After you submit your application through the Level 1 pathway, ICF typically reviews it within 4 weeks. Once approved, you'll schedule and take the credentialing exam. Many coaches go from "starting training" to "ACC letters after their name" in under a year.
How Much Does ICF ACC Certification Cost?
Transparency matters when you're making an investment in your career. Here's the full cost breakdown so there are no surprises:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Tandem Full ACC Level 1 Program (all modules, mentoring & exam prep) | $3,999 |
| ICF Credential Application Fee (member) | $175 |
| ICF Credential Application Fee (non-member) | $325 |
| ICF Membership (optional, annual) | $245/yr |
| Total Investment (with ICF membership) | ~$4,419 |
If you prefer to go module by module, individual modules start at $399 each, and the Coaching Foundations module covering ICF Competencies & Ethics is completely free – so you can experience Tandem's teaching before committing financially. See the full program breakdown above for individual pricing.
Compared to many ICF-accredited programs that charge $5,000–$12,000 for similar training, Tandem's MCC-led program represents strong value at this price point. Learn more about all of our ICF coaching training programs.

Frequently Asked Questions About ICF ACC Certification
Everything you need to know before getting started.
How much does ICF ACC certification cost in total?
With Tandem, the full ACC Level 1 program costs $3,999 and includes all four core modules, coaching foundations, mentoring, and exam prep. On top of that, you'll pay ICF's credential application fee – $175 if you're an ICF member or $325 if you're not. Optional ICF membership is $245 per year. All in, most graduates invest approximately $4,200 – $4,400 from enrollment to credential. You can also start with individual modules at $399 each if you prefer to spread the cost out.
How does the ICF ACC compare to other coaching certifications?
The ICF ACC is the most widely recognized coaching credential globally, accepted by corporations, government agencies, and coaching firms in over 140 countries. Other certifications – such as those from EMCC or the Center for Credentialing & Education (BCC) – are respected in their own right, but the ICF credential is the one most frequently required in job postings, RFPs, and corporate coaching panels. If you're building a coaching career or adding coaching to a leadership role, the ACC is the most universally understood starting point.
How long does it take to get ACC certified?
Most coaches complete the full process in 6 to 12 months. The training modules themselves can be completed faster – Tandem's modular structure lets you move at your own pace and start with any upcoming cohort. The main variable is accumulating your 100 coaching experience hours, which happen in parallel with your training. After submitting your Level 1 application, ICF typically reviews it within about 4 weeks.
What is the ICF credentialing exam format?
The ICF Credentialing Exam is a computer-based, knowledge assessment with 155 scored questions (plus 20 unscored pre-test items). It uses situational judgment format – you'll be given coaching scenarios and asked to select the best response based on ICF core competencies and ethics. The exam uses scaled scoring with a passing score of 460 out of 600. You have 3 hours to complete it. Tandem's Exam Prep Course ($29) specifically prepares you for this format so there are no surprises.
Do I need coaching experience before starting the program?
No prior coaching experience is required. Our program is designed to take you from zero to ACC-ready. The free Coaching Foundations module starts with the basics – ICF competencies, ethics, and what coaching is (and isn't). Many of our graduates come from HR, consulting, therapy, management, and other professional backgrounds with no formal coaching training. That said, if you do have coaching experience, the program will deepen and refine what you already know.
Can I take modules individually or do I have to buy the full program?
Absolutely – you can buy modules individually at $399 each. Many students start with the free Coaching Foundations module, then move through the paid modules one at a time as their schedule and budget allow. If you know you're committed to the full ACC credential, the full program at $3,999 saves you over $600 compared to buying everything separately. Either way, you'll receive the same quality training and MCC-level instruction.
What happens if I need to pause or take a break?
Life happens – we get it. Because our program is modular, you can pause between modules and pick up again with a future cohort at no additional cost. You don't need to complete all four modules back to back. Many students take a break between modules to practice what they've learned, accumulate coaching hours, or simply manage other commitments. Your progress and completed modules never expire.
Is the training live or self-paced?
It's a blend of both. The core modules include live, instructor-led sessions with Cherie and Alex (delivered via Zoom) combined with asynchronous materials you can work through on your own time. The live sessions are where the real coaching practice, feedback, and interaction happen. The self-paced components cover foundational knowledge and preparation work. This hybrid approach gives you the flexibility of online learning with the depth of real-time coaching practice.
What is mentor coaching and why do I need it?
Mentor coaching is an ICF requirement where a credentialed coach observes and provides feedback on your actual coaching. Think of it as coaching about your coaching – it's where you get specific, personalized guidance on how to improve. ICF requires 10 hours of mentor coaching over a minimum of three months, including both group and individual sessions. At Tandem, your mentor coaches are MCC-level – so you're getting feedback from coaches at the very top of the profession.
How many coaching hours do I need, and how do I get them?
ICF requires 100 hours of coaching experience for the ACC credential, of which at least 75 must be paid. The remaining 25 hours can be pro bono. These hours are accumulated alongside your training – you don't need to have them before you start. Many students begin coaching pro bono during their first modules to build skills and confidence, then transition to paid coaching as they progress. We provide guidance on how to find practice clients and structure your coaching sessions to count toward your hours.
What's the difference between Level 1 and Portfolio pathway?
The Level 1 pathway (Tandem's approach) means you complete an ICF-accredited program that packages everything together – education, mentoring, and performance evaluation. Your completion certificate is the main document you submit to ICF. It's the simplest, fastest route with a typical review time of about 4 weeks. The Portfolio pathway lets you piece together education from non-accredited or CCE-approved sources, but you must arrange mentoring and evaluation separately, document everything individually, and the ICF review can take up to 14 weeks. For most people, Level 1 is the recommended path.
Will this program prepare me for the credentialing exam?
Yes. The core training modules are built around ICF's core competencies and ethics – the exact framework the exam tests. On top of that, we offer a dedicated ICF Exam Prep Course for just $29 (included in the full program) that covers the situational judgment format, common pitfalls, and practice scenarios. Our goal is that you walk into the exam feeling confident, not anxious. The vast majority of Tandem graduates pass the exam on their first attempt.
Can I use this training toward a PCC credential later?
Yes – your ACC training hours with Tandem count toward the education requirements for the PCC (Professional Certified Coach) credential. To upgrade from ACC to PCC, you'll need additional education hours (an ICF Level 2 program), 500 total coaching hours, and additional mentor coaching. Tandem also offers an ICF PCC Level 2 program, so you can continue your entire credentialing journey with us if you choose.
What is the refund policy?
We want you to feel confident in your investment. If you're not satisfied after attending the first session of a module, you can request a full refund for that module. Once you've attended more than one session, we're unable to offer a refund for that module, but you're always welcome to complete it with a future cohort. The free Coaching Foundations module lets you experience our teaching style with zero financial risk before committing to anything paid. If you have specific concerns, reach out to us – we're happy to discuss your situation.
