GOAL SETTING TOOLS
Drill down through four layers of "what will this give you?"
to find what a goal is really about.
A goal that sounds right on paper can still feel empty in practice. That happens when the stated goal is not the actual goal - when the surface-level outcome is standing in for something deeper that has not been named.
This worksheet uses a cascading question structure to get beneath the first answer. "What will this give you?" is asked four times in sequence, each time pushing past the previous response. By the final box, most people have arrived at something closer to the real driver: a value, a need, or a belief they want to affirm.
That clarity changes how the goal is pursued. It connects daily actions to what actually matters - and it makes it much easier to evaluate whether a given path is the right one.
This technique draws on motivational interviewing and values-clarification approaches commonly used in coaching and behavior change work. The cascade works because each answer tends to be more abstract and more honest than the one before it.
