Coaching Practice Tools
A structured writing exercise for identifying when you’re most fully engaged.
Most people can describe what they do. Fewer can say when they’re most alive doing it. The gap between those two answers is where coaching often finds its most productive territory.
This exercise uses a personal essay format - not an academic one, but a structured reflection with a specific prompt: when have you felt most alive? That question tends to produce honest writing because it asks for memory, not analysis. People reach for concrete moments, specific details, the texture of an experience that mattered. What they write reveals more about their values, their energy sources, and their conditions for thriving than any questionnaire.
The exercise works best when a client is disconnected from motivation or is describing their life primarily in terms of obligations. The writing often surfaces what questionnaires can’t: embodied knowing about what matters.
