Reflection & Journaling Tools
Trace a goal through five layers of emotional
significance to find the motivation that holds.
Surface-level motivation is fragile. "I want to be promoted" or "I want to grow my business" are legitimate goals, but they rarely sustain effort through difficulty on their own. What sustains effort is the feeling the outcome is expected to produce - and those feelings, when examined carefully, often reveal what the person actually values.
This drill uses a five-step cascade: each step asks what feeling the previous answer will produce. The sequence moves from goal to emotional significance, tracing a path through whatever layers are actually present rather than the ones that sound professionally appropriate.
The depth varies. Some clients reach a core feeling by step two. Others use all five levels and still find more. The tool works when answers are honest, not when they sound coherent. If a step produces "I don't know," that answer is worth noting - it often marks the exact boundary where the real work is.
Before your next session: Look at your final answer. Is this feeling one you experience regularly, or is it largely absent from your current daily experience? Note your observation.
