Procrastination
Analysis

MINDSET & GROWTH TOOLS

Understand what drives avoidance and build
a path to consistent action.

What Procrastination Reveals

Procrastination is not a character flaw or a time-management problem. It is a response to something uncomfortable - usually fear of failure, ambiguity about where to start, emotional resistance to a task, or the quiet dread that the result won't be good enough. The avoidance behavior itself is logical: if a task feels threatening, stepping away from it relieves the discomfort temporarily.

The cost shows up later. Work piles up. Deadlines compress. The original discomfort is now compounded by guilt, rushed execution, and the knowledge that you had more time and didn't use it. Understanding the specific trigger behind a particular pattern of avoidance is what makes it possible to address the actual problem - not just force yourself through it with willpower.

How to Use This Worksheet

  1. Start with observation, not judgment. In Section 1, list tasks you consistently delay. Be specific - "my quarterly report" is more useful than "work tasks."
  2. Identify the why, not just the what. For each avoided task, choose the avoidance reason that fits most closely. If more than one applies, note all of them.
  3. Go deeper on the top three. Section 2 asks you to name the real fear underneath. This takes honesty - "I'll be judged" or "I might discover I'm not capable" is more useful than "it's boring."
  4. Commit to a smallest possible first step. Not a plan - just the single smallest action that would move the task forward.
  5. Build a specific commitment in Section 3. A vague intention rarely survives the first distraction. Name the day, the time, and the likely obstacle.

Procrastination Patterns

List tasks you regularly avoid. For each, identify the primary reason and how you feel while avoiding it.

Task I Avoid Why I Avoid It How I Feel When Avoiding What I Do Instead
☐ Fear of failure

Root Cause Analysis

Choose your top 3 avoided tasks from Section 1. For each, answer the questions below honestly.

Task 1
The real fear underneath this avoidance
What is at stake if I keep avoiding it
The smallest possible first step I could take
Task 2
The real fear underneath this avoidance
What is at stake if I keep avoiding it
The smallest possible first step I could take
Task 3
The real fear underneath this avoidance
What is at stake if I keep avoiding it
The smallest possible first step I could take

Action Commitment

For each of your top 3 tasks, make a specific commitment. Vague intentions rarely survive the first distraction.

Task 1
Specific next action I will take
When I will do it (day and time)
What is most likely to pull me off track
My plan for when that happens
Task 2
Specific next action I will take
When I will do it (day and time)
What is most likely to pull me off track
My plan for when that happens
Task 3
Specific next action I will take
When I will do it (day and time)
What is most likely to pull me off track
My plan for when that happens

Before Your Next Session

Reflect on what you noticed while completing this worksheet. These questions are for your own thinking before you discuss your findings with your coach.

Reflection Prompts

1. Looking at your avoidance reasons across Section 1 - is there a pattern? Do most of your avoided tasks share the same root cause, or do different tasks trigger different fears?

2. What would it mean for you personally if these tasks were consistently done on time? What would that make possible?
