Communication & Relationships Tools

Give people the operating instructions they need
to work with you well.

Why This Tool Matters

Every team member comes with unwritten rules. Communication preferences, energy patterns, pet peeves, what they need to do their best work. Most conflicts on teams come not from bad intentions but from violated expectations that nobody knew existed.

The problem is that most people assume their preferences are obvious, or they wait for colleagues to figure them out through experience. That process takes months, generates friction, and often produces incorrect conclusions. A Personal User Manual short-circuits all of that.

By making your operating preferences explicit and shareable, you give your team the information they actually need to work with you effectively - from day one, not year two.

How to Use This Manual

  1. Complete the manual honestly. The value comes from specificity, not polish. "I prefer Slack for quick questions" is more useful than "I value good communication."
  2. Share it with your team and manager. Send it directly, bring it to a team meeting, or use it as a conversation starter during onboarding.
  3. Revisit it periodically. Preferences change. What worked for you two years ago may not reflect how you work today.
