Personal Mission
Statement Builder

Assessment & Discovery Tools

A structured process for articulating what you stand for,
what you contribute, and how you want to show up in the world.

Why a Mission Statement Matters

A personal mission statement is not a motivational phrase you hang on a wall. It is a decision-making tool. When you know what you stand for and what kind of impact you are here to create, it becomes easier to say no to things that pull you off course - and easier to stay committed when things get difficult.

Most people operate from implicit values they have never examined directly. They make choices by habit, by what others expect, or by what feels urgent in the moment. A mission statement makes those implicit values explicit and actionable. It gives you a reference point that belongs to you, not to your role or your organization.

What a Strong Mission Statement Includes

Your core values: The qualities that define how you want to operate - integrity, curiosity, courage, care - regardless of context.

Your contribution: What you bring to the people and systems around you. Not your job title - the actual difference you make.

Your sense of direction: The broader aspiration that gives your daily choices meaning beyond the immediate task.

The builder on the following pages works through three phases: reflection, drafting, and refinement. Complete the reflection prompts honestly before attempting to write anything. The drafting phase will be easier - and more accurate - if the reflection is done first.

How to Use This Builder

  1. Work through all reflection prompts before writing your draft. The prompts surface the raw material your mission statement will draw from.
  2. Write a rough draft in the draft box - aim for 2-3 sentences. Do not edit yet.
  3. Read it aloud. Does it sound like you? Does it feel accurate? Mark what does not land.
  4. Refine once. Change one or two things, not everything. A mission statement that is 80% right and actually used is more valuable than a perfect one that stays theoretical.
  5. Test it over time. Return to it when facing a major decision. If it guides the choice clearly, it is working.

Phase 1: Reflection

1. Core Values
List 3-5 values that feel most essential to who you are - not who you think you should be.
2. Your Contribution
What do you bring to the people around you? What would be missing if you were not there?
3. Moments of Alignment
Describe a moment when your work or actions felt completely right - deeply satisfying and fully you.
4. Legacy
What do you want to be known for? What would you want people to say about your impact?
5. Direction
What larger purpose or aspiration pulls you forward? What are you ultimately working toward?

Phase 2: Draft & Refine

Sentence Starters (use one or combine)
My purpose is to...  |  I am at my best when...  |  I commit to...  |  I exist to...

First Draft

Gut Check
Read your draft aloud. Circle any phrase that feels off. Note what to change below.

Refined Mission Statement

Before Your Next Session

Where in your current work does your mission statement feel most alive - and where does the gap feel widest? What one decision in the next two weeks could you make differently if you used this statement as a filter?
