Where This Tool Helps

Limiting beliefs do not announce themselves. They operate as assumptions - background conditions that feel like facts. "I'm not a natural leader," "I need more experience before I can do that," "People like me don't get opportunities like that." The content varies. The structure is the same: a generalization about yourself or the world that narrows what you consider possible.

The Reframe worksheet works by making the belief explicit and then asking a specific question: what is a more functional alternative? Not necessarily the opposite - a complete reversal often feels as false as the original. A more functional alternative is a belief that explains the same situation but gives you more room to act.

Three rows means three beliefs. Most clients can name more. The steps below explain how to select the ones worth working.

How to Use This Worksheet

  1. In the first "Current Belief" box, write a belief that you notice limiting your choices or your sense of what is possible. State it as you actually believe it, not as you wish you believed it.
  2. In the corresponding "Better Alternatives" box, write a belief that is more functional - one that explains the same evidence but opens more options. It does not need to feel fully true yet; it needs to feel possible.
  3. Work through all three rows before evaluating any of them. The first belief you name is rarely the most constraining one.
  4. After completing all three, look at the "Better Alternatives" column. Which alternative would have the most impact on your behavior if you actually held it?
  5. Identify one action you could take this week that would be consistent with that alternative belief - even if you do not fully believe it yet.
