Where This Tool Helps

Goals fail when they treat change as a single event rather than a pattern of behavior. Deciding to pursue a goal is one moment. What determines whether that decision holds are the daily habits already in place - and which of those habits are quietly working against it.

This map creates explicit visibility into both sides. The habits that support a goal are often underused because they're not consciously connected to the goal. The habits that work against it are often invisible - they feel like personality or circumstance, not behavior that can be changed.

The two questions about habits are not symmetrical. Identifying supporting habits builds a case for using them more deliberately. Identifying undermining habits requires honest observation without self-criticism - the point is pattern recognition, not judgment.

How to Use This Map

  1. State the goal clearly in the first box. One sentence is enough - don't describe the entire situation, just name what you're after.
  2. For "Why do I want to achieve this," write the real motivation. Not the professional answer - the actual one. If there are multiple reasons, list them all.
  3. For "What habits do I need," think practically: daily behaviors, recurring actions, patterns of attention that directly contribute to this goal. Be specific about timing and frequency where you can.
  4. For "What habits might slow me down," observe without judgment. These are existing patterns, not character flaws. Name them accurately.
  5. Bring the completed map to your session. The coach will often work primarily with the fourth box, since undermining habits are where most leverage is found.
