Planning & Organization Tools

A visual milestone planner for mapping the steps between
where you are and where you're going.

Using This Timeline

Longer-term goals have a way of feeling both important and remote. They're real enough to think about, but far enough away that the path from here to there stays blurry. The Goal Action Timeline addresses that blurriness directly - it asks you to name the specific waypoints between your current state and your destination, in sequence.

The tool works best when you resist the urge to write the goal at one end and "get started" at the other. The value is in the milestones in between - the points where something will be demonstrably different from today. Each milestone should represent a state change, not just an activity. Not "research vendors" but "three vendors shortlisted." Not "have team conversations" but "all direct reports briefed and feedback collected."

The eight milestone structure gives you enough resolution to see around corners while leaving room to adjust as you move. Not every milestone is visible from the starting point - that's expected. Fill what you can see clearly and treat the later milestones as provisional until the earlier ones are complete.

How to Use This Timeline

  1. Write your destination goal at the top first. State what success looks like at the end. Then return to milestone 1 and ask: what has to be true before anything else can happen?
  2. Work forward, not backward. Start from where you are and sequence forward - it reveals dependencies you wouldn't see working from the deadline back.
  3. Name states, not tasks. Each milestone describes a condition that will be true, not an activity you'll do. "Budget approved" instead of "submit budget." "Prototype tested" instead of "run tests."
  4. Add rough dates if you have them. Precision matters less than sequence. A rough date anchors the milestone in time and makes the whole timeline feel real rather than theoretical.
  5. Leave later milestones open if the path isn't clear yet. It's legitimate to fill milestones 1-4 in detail and treat 5-8 as placeholders. Clarity comes from movement.
