Executive Presence Self-Assessment

An 18-item self-rating across the core dimensions of executive presence - with a scoring guide.

Executive presence is one of the most frequently cited factors in senior leadership advancement and one of the least precisely defined. Descriptions tend toward the subjective: "she commands the room," "he inspires confidence." This assessment makes the construct specific enough to work with.

The 18 items span five dimensions: communication clarity, composure under pressure, decision confidence, interpersonal accountability, and professional presentation. Rating yourself on each one against a consistent 5-point scale surfaces a pattern - the dimensions where your self-perception is high and the ones where honest reflection produces lower scores than you might like.

Two patterns commonly emerge. First, leaders tend to score themselves higher on visible dimensions (speaking clearly, presenting well) and lower on the dimensions that require managing internal states (remaining calm under pressure, making confident decisions in ambiguity). Second, the lowest scores often cluster in a single dimension, pointing to a specific developmental focus.

The scoring guide gives you a baseline, not a verdict. Where you fall today is a starting point for the coaching work, not a fixed characteristic.

Rate each item as it actually is, not as you'd like it to be or as it is on your best days. The value is in the honest snapshot.

How to Use This Assessment

  1. Read each item and rate it from 1 to 5: 1 = rarely or never, 2 = sometimes, 3 = about half the time, 4 = usually, 5 = consistently.
  2. Rate against a recent three-month window - not your best year or your worst moment.
  3. Complete all 18 items before looking at the scoring guide. Knowing where the cutoffs are tends to shift ratings toward the middle.
  4. Total your score and note the scoring range you fall in.
  5. Identify the three lowest-scoring items. These are your development priorities for the coaching work ahead.
