Coaching Practice Tools

Three prompts that surface a client’s sources of agency, control, and confidence.

Where This Tool Helps

These three prompts target the same territory from slightly different angles: the conditions under which a client feels capable and effective. The distinction between "powerful," "in control," and "confident" matters - clients often experience these differently, and the gap between them is often worth exploring.

The prompts work well as a session opener when the work is about agency, transitions, or leadership identity. They can also be assigned as pre-session writing when a client is in a pattern of focusing primarily on what’s not working.

The answers are not a fixed inventory of strengths. They’re a situational read - what’s active for this person right now. Use them to understand context, not to build a static profile.

How to Use This Worksheet

  1. This is a client-facing reflection tool. Assign it before a session or use it as a session opening exercise.
  2. Each prompt has space for a full written response. Encourage clients to write more than they think is necessary - the second and third sentences often carry more information than the first.
  3. "What makes you feel powerful?" and "What makes you feel in control?" appear similar but often produce different answers. Both are worth exploring.
  4. "What makes you feel confident?" invites reflection on self-efficacy - not dominance, but the situations where the client trusts their own judgment and capability.
  5. Use the patterns across all three responses as the coaching entry point in session.
